Introduction: Kearsten Furtick

Hello, my name is Kearsten Furtick and I am a senior majoring in Microbiology. I grew up in an extremely small town in South Carolina so I enjoy spending time with my family. I also really like playing card games. I am not certain of what my dream job would be, but I will likely be doing biomedical research after I graduate.
Major issues in biomedicine involve the lack of information sharing between companies and between companies and the public. In some cases, various groups are "racing" to discover cures or come up with the best treatment for various diseases. Also, pharmaceutical companies sometime neglect to provide patients with information known about side effects or other problems with medications or treatments.
In the medical and biology fields communication usually involves reporting new findings and the results of experimentation. This is done by publications in scientific magazines and journals.
To effectively communicate, the results reported must be very accurate and complete when recorded. Also, new findings must be written so that all people can understand the meanings of the article. This means that each concept that is not common knowledge must be explained thoroughly.
In microbiology, researchers need to be able to properly write journal articles to report findings, use computer software and machines to obtain and record data, and interpret these results. Researchers must be able to report information in a way that can be understood by the general public.

  1. I agree that lack of communication is a major problem in many industries. Do you feel that researchers will continue to interpret their own findings or will communication majors be hired to interpret and present the data in a more effective manner?

  2. I feel that in my field of study a person would have to have both a major in biology or something similar and also in communications to be able to interpret the data. Communications majors may become necessary to make the data more universally understandable. I feel that the lack of communication is more so due to a feeling of pride about ones work and not wanting to share information.
