Introduction: Elliot Todd

Hey everyone, my name is Elliot Todd and I'm a senior in Ceramics and Materials Engineering. Once I graduate from Clemson, I plan to work in industry. I really want to focus on metallurgy. Most people have no clue what a Ceramics and Materials engineer when I tell them my major. Basically what I would be doing in industry is looking for reasons that certain parts may be failing, and then finding ways to strengthen the material so that it will be able to perform the task asked of it. During most summers I do odd jobs with my father, and last summer I help tear down a 1000 sq ft building.

One of the biggest communication problems would have to be not being specific enough. If you weren't to give the right units for the parts you are needing then you could end up with something that will not work. Most of the communication is face to face. Most projects that you work on would be in a small team. E-mails and phone conversations would be other means of communicating. Humor would probably be one of best communication tools in my field. You are working with a smaller group of people so you want to be friends with all of them. While you are doing a serious job you want to be having fun while doing it. The most important skill you need to have in communication for this kind of work is to be clear with what you are asking other people to do. If you ask someone to do something and they are not sure of what you want them to do then you can waste a whole day of work.

  1. When working with large groups of people, do you think humor would still be an effective means of communication?
